Artist Statement
My recent work explores local ecology and environmental justice issues in Alabama, specifically those related to EPA Superfund sites and trash. It includes mainly ink drawings and oil paintings which often have an ambiguous atmosphere and play with light, transparency, and multiples of things like plastic bags and animals.
I am interested in the beauty and the irony of the plastic bag. Plastic bags are lightweight and translucent and have the appearance of ephemerality but are in fact semi-permanent, taking up to a thousand years to decompose, and toxic. I draw and paint animals such as moths, bees, jellyfish, and frogs interacting with this detritus. The climate crisis and its affect on wildlife evoke loss and guilt.
